Statement from Rep. Brad Klippert on the passage of House Bill 2037 and modifying the standard for use of force by peace officers

Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, assistant ranking member on the House Public Safety Committee, released the following statement after the passage of House Bill 2037 today.

“First, I want to thank our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line daily to serve our communities!

House Bill 2037 moves us forward in correcting some of the unintended consequences of the laws enacted in 2021 by providing a definition for our law enforcement officers on the physical use of force. I supported this bill today, but believe it does not go far enough. There is still work that needs to be done; however, the provisions in this bill put us in a better place than where we currently stand.

“It is imperative that we empower and enable our law enforcement officers to do the jobs we ask and expect them to do – keeping our communities safe and crime-free to the best of their ability.”

House Bill 2037 passed the Washington State House of Representatives on an 87-11 vote. It now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
