Klippert to host “Informed Citizens: Government 101” meeting

An event hosted by Rep. Brad Klippert, entitled “Informed Citizens: Government 101,” will be held Saturday, April 26.

Klippert says the goal of the meeting is to provide constituents an overview on how to find proposed legislation (a bill), how to read proposed legislation and, hopefully, most of all, how to find the truth concerning proposed legislation.

“Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, 'Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of…our…methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.'  That's what I want to do: enable 'an alert and knowledgeable citizenry' in order to provide for transparent, responsible government,” said Klippert, R-Kennewick. “There have been a lot of controversial issues before the Washington State Legislature the last few years and oftentimes there is a lot of misinformation floating around. I am hopeful this event would reduce that and provide for a much more transparent state government. It is important people be able to access the facts and find the truth concerning their government.”

Secretary of State Kim Wyman will also be attending to discuss the role of her office in elections and the initiative process.  Also attending, speaking and answering questions will be Rep. Larry Haler, R-Richland.

Klippert has also requested lobbyists attend to explain their role and work when asked to lobby “for” or “against” a bill.

“Most people understand the basic premise of 'how a bill becomes a law,' but I want to hopefully provide a road map of how to stay informed and find the truth.  This should provide for more transparency on the work we do and at the same time, give constituents some tools that help them stay informed,” said Klippert.
